Re: advantages of using extra command centers
Just to add to what CMGeek said, it's worth remembering that command centers can be fixed by repair bots, whereas shields cannot - so to some extent, you can use them like rechargeable, omnidirectional shields (although they can absorb far less damage, and do not protect other components the way shi...

Re: need more missiles
The missile limit is part of the challenge - without it, the game would be far too easy. You need to switch to using Plectrons as your main armament (which will require that you learn to aim), as they pack a far greater punch than other missiles, and design some better ships for your wingmen to fly ...

Re: What do the cost 2/2/8 mean?
It means the cost varies depending on where the component is placed. Shields cost 2 credits when placed on the front or sides of a ship, but 8 credits when placed at the rear (where they are most useful, as most guided missiles will usually hit the rear).

Cool, thanks. I downloaded it, and I'll give it a go in the next day or two. EDIT: I think something's gone a bit wrong - it forgets all the custom ships I import. I have to re-import them every time I run CM. :( EDIT: Currently on mission 43 (although not doing very well - out of practice). The spi...

So says you... Either way, it's not directly comparable. Like I said - custom ships don't really improve beyond 150 credits in value (by which point you've pretty much filled the available component slots, and adding more shields isn't worth it it because it reduces performance) - and you can afford...

I think you're getting confused... Pulling higher G is totally different from out-turning something. The actual turning circle of a missile is *much* greater than that of an aircraft. Here's the maths, done by someone on another forum: AIM-9X maxes at 50 G (which is probably in the boost phase with ...

I see someone's been using the ship file editor. They're good looking ships, but I think there are a few problems... 16 stealth units is far too many - you'd be much better of spending the credits on missiles/launchers/etc. Stealth units are not directional like scanners are - it makes absolutely no...

Putting wingmen in the wider positions also means there's less chance of enemy ships sneaking past you. Using the "line" formation helps too. With the default "wedge" formation, you're always at the front, and as soon as you spot the enemy all your wingmen will fire a load of missiles in your backsi...

These are good ideas, although they've been suggested before. Unfortunately, it seems like CM is no longer being developed - the last update was way back in 2004, and Sean has only posted 5 comments in the CM section of the forum since 2007. I'm still hoping a thrid party will one day release a CM c...

In my experience, it's no good trying to have separate attack and dogfighting ships. You have no control over their actions (they even ignore the "stay in formation" order), and the AI isn't smart enough to prioritize targets. The end result is that attack ships will always end up dogfighting, and f...
