castles are the most worthless piece in slay Castles rule! They're not all that useful against the AI since the AI is so dumb. Against humans they're essential for survival in the midgame, until the provinces are big and the knights come out. Even after that it is still an effective trench warfare ...

Re: Preferred colour scheme?
Just seeing what colour scheme people use. Personally I edited the file so that I have a very dark sheme with all the primary colors + one green because it's kind of hard to see the green scheme, and I don't like the other schemes. Do you guys like the default or do you have some other scheme up yo...

Difference of opinion -- I happen to like bottlenecks, if they are distributed in a way that adds to the strategic complexity of the situation.gruff wrote: We all know what makes a fun multiplayer map: large open areas, so that most people get a chance to develop, a few lakes, very few bottlenecks.

just this year
I Googled "online strategy games" or something like that and sifted through the muck until I found this gem. It has fascinated me ever since!

"a question of start positions"...
Gruff said in another thread: "Ranking will be more or less meaningless until we get balanced maps. As it is it's mostly a question of start positions." In large part true, and for some maps more than others definitely so. The problem is to think up a better system for assigning the initial hexes of...

Yes, I don't want to make the rules customisable as then you wouldn't be able to compare scores. That's understandable for the "challenge games", but for multiplayer network games it doesn't seem to be an issue. Each battle is a world in itself -- why not let the conditions vary from one to the next?

another idea for a game option
I love this game, but I'm always thinking "what if?". I'd really like to have a bunch of options to choose from before the game starts. I won't give my whole wish-list again here, just one more that I thought of last night... Fog of War: select this option and for the whole game you only see your ow...

Okay.... It is *not* fancy sprites jumping around looking pretty. Just the opposite. I made all the icons as plain and plainly readable as I could think of, and so that they don't clutter up the map with visual noise. The men are chess pieces -- pawn, knight, rook, and king. A hut is a dollar sign. ...
new theme
Hi All!
I've made a new theme for Slay. Sean seems to be busy with other projects and hasn't uploaded it to this site yet, but in the meantime it is available
in the "Files" section of this Yahoo group....

Another point... Often the players in weaker position will ally (via chat) and form a temporary truce in order to bring down the leading player together. This leads to the "early leader syndrome" in which the first big territory is not always the one to win -- frequently it is the player who comes o...
