Re: No more Melee Weapons?

Well, it probably should be contrary to how the AI works because bayonet charges were a rarity in WW2, as it was normally a desperation move (with the exception of cavalry and Gurkhas). German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was an avid fan of bayonet attacks in WW1 and was quite successful in routing Fr...

Re: No more Melee Weapons?

Well, bayonet charges did indeed happen in WW2. The Rumanians trapped in Stalingrad performed several, personally led by general officers, three of whom died. This reinforces my earlier post stating that troops of any quality being led by an Elite leader should be allowed to conduct a bayonet charge.

Points well made, Perturabo. I had not played Close Combat, Armored Brigade, or Steel Panthers. Thank you for your information.

Re: Is anyone still interested in this game?

I wonder... I understand that Mr. O'Connor is a one-man show and is focused on the more profitable games, but I think that maybe if the game had an open game license (OGL) for player-designed mods, he could harness the imaginations and industry of his many fans, which would increase the overall popu...

Re: No more Melee Weapons?

It was actually rare for troops who were out of ammo to fix bayonets and charge opponents who still had ammo. When they did, however, the results were often dramatic, due to the psychological effect of a disciplined bayonet charge: the fear of close combat with a better fighter would make Raw troops...

Re: No more Melee Weapons?

The AI for infantry dictates that infantry with no ammunition will not close with an enemy. The only melee weapon I saw in the game was the Chinese Big Sword section, which did indeed score a bayonet kill against a Japanese soldier after the Japanese ran out of ammunition. Why a bayonet and not a sw...

Re: Wish List

My wish list: 1. Field fortifications: fighting holes (foxholes), trenches, bunkers, gun emplacements, etc. 2. Obstacles: Abatis, barbed wire, roadblocks, anti-tank ditches, dragon's teeth, mine fields (anti-personnel and anti-tank), punji stakes, etc. 3. Weapons: sniper rifles, anti-tank rifles tha...

Re: Home Guard mod

Hmm... I seem to recall that the British Home Guard had some WWI Stokes-type trench mortars, which had large warheads but very short range. I don't know how to reflect that in the game. Other than that, I figure that it would just be masses of Raw British riflemen versus Regular German Wehrmacht tro...

Re: Is anyone still interested in this game?

Well, it is more realistic than most other games. Mr. O'Connor has done a good job researching armor thicknesses and angles, armor penetration of various weapons, the effects of troops quality and morale. Compare that to more expensive games like Command & Conquer and Starcraft. The only comparable ...

Re: The Invincible Light Armour of Doom Problem

Addendum to the above: Raw troops without anti-tank weapons would flee from AFVs. As a real-life example, Israel found in 1948, 1956, and 1967 that charging Arab troops with tanks would cause the Arab soldiers to break and run. In 1973, however, charging Israeli tanks suffered heavy casualties at th...

Re: Squad 2 commands

In real life, the squad leader of the first squad is next in line of succession if the platoon commander and platoon sergeant die. In Firefight, the unit headquarters is "Squad 1," so the first squad is "Squad 2." Even if this is a programming glitch, it's a realistic one.

Re: Is the end of the war hard-coded?

Good question. Check the equipment listings to make sure that your troops and vehicles have 1945Q3 and 1945Q4 availability.
