The stranded ship usually IS valuable. In all the stranded ship missions I've flown in, the ship stranded is always the most expensive ship in its particular class. Maybe the game feels so badly about losing a 200-credit ship that it will make you lose 300 credits' worth of wingmates to get it back....

Always?

I'm not sure if I follow you. Were there specific examples (then and now) you had in mind?

The way most college programming courses seem to start off nowadays is with object-oriented stuff, then some fourth-generation language with extras heaped on. My university does Java first, as a primer for C++. I have to say that Java is infinitely useful, but only as a stepping stone to learn how t...

Keeping your wingmates alive isn't too difficult. I have a wingman right now that's a veteran of over 25 battles. Configure your mates correctly, and they'll even keep each other alive. I usually find that ships from the same class behave the best together, since the computer AI flies them with simi...

You're absolutely right: The only way I've found to add acceptable stealth onto my ships is with almost no radar. My best stealth fighter (I named it the Ninja) has 11 stealth on it. It helps enormously to have these guys on your wing, because if you have a non-stealth ship with good repair, you can...

I agree with Legacy. MS Paint works well for just casual graphics ideas. Just like in the real world, when you have an idea to write down, you don't always write it out on stationery with a calligraphy pen; sometimes you just scribble something on a napkin. It's handier.

I'm with OMJ. I like about ten Yataris on my ships, but no more. The best use I've found is against stationary targets: I get up to full speed, and cruise around the edge of a turret ring, spewing Yataris all the while. Depending on turn rate, ten Yataris can oust three to four turrets in one pass (...

Hear, hear!

Let's not all lose sight of how great a game this really is, no matter how many things we see that we'd like to change. Even without a scanner missile, the Plectron is enough for me.

That would suck. I switched to 1280x1024 a while back, and now I can't stand anything less. Hard to believe that most games were written for 320x240, back in the day.

BASIC is the programming language developed so that almost anyone could write a program. It was made to make programming easier by limiting the amount people needed to know about compilers and so forth. Visual Basic is the BASIC language, but with fourth-generation functions added in (windows, toolb...

Audacity is a great freeware sound utility. You can open up a sound file and view its waveform, then do all the cut, fade, paste, and insert you want. I use it to take the background music from my favorite video games and convert it into CD tracks.

Here's the link.

The Roll of Honour actually HAS infinite slots in 4.0, but it only shows the best few. From what I can gather, the roll of honor is the file used to calculate whether the pilot you're restoring is already dead, to prevent cheating, so a pilot is added to the RoH every time you die, no matter what.

The General has arms, they're just tucked behind his back. The things on his shoulders are his epaulets. It's a traditional French uniform, about late 17th century if I remember rightly.

(Most likely I'm completely off; I'm surprised I even remembered how to spell "epaulets".)

I used to hate Risk and their ilk, simply because of all the dice rolling that goes on. It wasn't until much later that I realized that random chance is just as much a part of strategy as anything else. After all, a real commander in a real war has no control over certain things. How many commanders...
