I had my HQ killed a few times on Very Hard level, but I never had Squad 2 take over.

Jean Boule's idea of using anti-tank rifles as sniper rifles is intriguing. I'll see if they affect infantry now. Things may have changed since 2007.

LMGs are good because they have a longer range and are better able to suppress more than one enemy at a time. In open ground, a few LMGs can keep an enemy's heads down from beyond rifle range. They are useful for maintaining the suppression of an enemy who has been bombarded and is about to be close...

I personally don't like cheat codes. They ruin the point of the game: to challenge one's mind. That said, the lack of a scalable AI in the game does make it harder for novice wargamers in campaign mode. Single battles can, of course, be set to an easier level. In the Avalon Hill/Multi-Man Publishing classic, Squad Leader, infantry could close combat armored vehicles with grenades and small arms. Agreed, Firefight should have something similar for Regular and Elite troops; Raw troops would indeed panic and flee from AFVs.

Charging a near ambush is a standard battle drill. That's why the "panicked" enemy is rushing your lines. Your in-game experience beautifully shows why this is a standard battle drill. That the game reflects this accurately is to its credit.

I tried the two-man elite rifleman team as snipers, but their range was still capped at 250 meters and they would only engage at close range. I then modified the two-man elite rifleman team to "Behaviour=Infantry_HMG" so that they would engage targets at long range. Their range is still capped at 25...

Yes, I play it quite a bit. I actually like it more than more expensive games like Starcraft II because 1) I can mod it, and 2) it's more realistic.
