A great open-source freeware utility is Bloodshed Dev-C++. Learning C is a lot easier with an IDE.
There are a lot of shareware/commercial programs out there, like Game Maker and such, but unless you want to create a very specific type of game (Adventure Game Studio is great for Sierra/Lucasarts-style games, but not much else) then don't bother with those. It's far better to learn a language, so you can then program almost ANY kind of game, and it'll be higher quality than anything the pre-made game software can produce. It's like the difference between frozen dinners and home-cooked meals.

I used this IDE when I took a C class at a local comunity college. Great program and the cost was right!OrigamiGuy wrote:A great open-source freeware utility is Bloodshed Dev-C++. Learning C is a lot easier with an IDE.
Be wary of community colleges. Mine was a Saturday morning class that started at 7:00 AM, which made it hard to get up and go too. The instructors daily job was as a programmer, but he was a poor teacher.
The class only met for 4 sessions, 4 hours each. So a total of 16 hours class time. The entire class was lecture. No actual keyboard time in class, that was to be done at home.
To me this is a poor way to do it. Should have been more classes with a shorter time so that you did not get information overload. And there should have been pratice time during, or atleast after class, with teacher there to answer questions and help when you get stuck.
So, I blew $275 U.S. for the class and still can not program in C! This did not include the very expensive $115 for the book!

There's still tons of point and click adventures, but they're not mainstream anymore so you need to hunt around a bit more.Anonymous wrote:I agree. And some really good games have come out of the pre-made game editors: Tierra Games has remade King's Quest I and Quest For Glory II in the new point-and-click format of KQ5. They're excellent. And free.
<off topic> Whatever happened to good old adventure games, anyway? </off topic>

I'm glad I didn't see this a few weeks ago or I would have taken the shortcut. I'm focusing in DirectX game programming so I can move into real 3d and shading.
