Hex Map Creation Routine

Can someone give me a clue about generating hex maps for games. I mean how does a hex map get genned up ? You don't code draw every single line do you ?
Do you group them into a single entity and then replicate that entity or ?
Howzit work ?

I see no reason why you wouldn't draw every line individually.
Computers are very good at doing the same thing over and over again.

How would a grid system work involving hexes work, since it doesn't really work in a traditional XY plane?
