WHEN and HOW did you first play slay?

do you remember where you first heard about slay or how you came by it? I think for me it was around 1995/96 - i got it from a friend of my mum as the shareware version. It's not until now that i've owned my own machine so been able to justify the full version.
sean - is the original trial island one of the current ones?

I had (and still have (on floppy disk somewhere)) the 1995 trial version. I don't remember how I got it though.

I Googled "online strategy games" or something like that and sifted through the muck until I found this gem. It has fascinated me ever since!

I take Slay from somewhat CD-collection somewhere around June or July 1994. It was version 3-something. After that I re-translated it for Sean and so got full version. It isn't another way for me to get it legally. :) BTW, Sean, did you sell many licenses to Russia?

That's just cool!
Would I get an extra set of licences if I translated the games into... uhh... brail? What about pig latin... Maybe drunken gibberish!
Probably not, but thst was cool...

I still have the original PC version of slay (shareware, so only one island) installed at home, although I hadn't played it for a while. I got it on a cover disk some time around 1994, I think. Funnily enough, I started it up last night because I thought the new version was a bit different, and sure enough..
- In the original version you could only place men in your own territory on your first turn, you couldn't capture.
- Also, the stronghold wasn't as strong as it is now. If there was a 2 hex enemy territory, you could use a serf to take the hex adjacent to the stronghold and it'd turn into a tree.
- The stats & cost windows were done as separate windows to the side of the main one, rather than being integrated in it.

i think last year i was browsing the web for demos of simple games, and found a link here from a link off of the missionrisk page, and downloaded the games. Then later i bought them. All I know is that ive improved a lot since I first played, meaning i didnt play very well at first

Taking a Time Management class where the class was designed around a Dell Axim PDA that came with the class, and the teacher had us all load up about 15 games to our PDA's and Slay was one of them, played it a few times and was hooked.
