Palm trees growing without being next to another?

Hi,

I have version 4.1, and in the instructions/rules it says that Palm trees grow if they are next to water and they are next to another palm? However, I observe that they grow even when not next to another palm?

Cut/paste from the Help Index:
"Palm trees
Grow on hexagons on the coast which are next to another palm tree."

Am I missing anything?

They also grow on a gravestone that was left there from the previous turn. I think that is what you are seeing.

ok, I will have to make sure I observe a little more closely but I don't think I observed that. That being said, even in the Tutorial (help.tutorial), it shows a single lone palm tree that at the end of the tutorial spawning 2 more trees below it, and there was no gravestone next to it, nor is there another palm. It is, however, next to a PINE Tree.

So the question is, does a palm or pine have the same effect of parenting trees by being next to each other being opposites? If so, then why doesn't the Pine tree northeast of the palm also spawn a pine tree?

Also you will notice that there wasn't any grave markers southwest of the palm, because the 2 hexes never change color...

If that tutorial was taken from an actual game, this then demonstates that palms can spawn without being next to another palm.

Just played a game, and yep, I observed a single palm tree in areas with only one color controling the whole area, so no gravestone conditions exist, and that single palm tree spawning another palm all on it's own.

Ahhh, I think I see what's confusing you now. From the help file:

Trees grow on your hexagons at the beginning of your turn. You do not collect any money from hexagons which have trees on them. The two types of trees are:

Pine trees
Grow on empty hexagons which are surrounded by two or more pine trees.

Palm trees
Grow on hexagons on the coast which are next to another palm tree.

ie palm trees grow next to any other one palm tree as long as it's on the coast.

Ok, that seems to resolve it.
So if I understand correctly,

Psuedo code:
If exists that a hex has a Palm touching one of the six side AND a coast touching one of the six sides of the same hex
Then, spawn a palm in that hex at the beginning of the turn.

That seems to make sense and resolve the tutorial example too, because the coast line is touching both of the two hexes to the southwest of that palm.

Maybe just one nit on clarification, you might want to add the word, 'empty'

Grow on empty hexagons on the coast which are next to another palm tree.
