It is too easy to win
It is too easy to win
I have the latest version 3.b
I find the game too easy to win. I always play "very clever" and I have yet to lose a game. Surely, this is abnormal ....(?)
One thing wich seems to lose the game for the puters : It attacks every single turn. And almost always it seems to choose the easiest position to conquer instead of attacking a position which would break my continent. So if you conquer a continent and just make sure to leave a territory with no army on it in order to deflect the puter's attention, you get to keep the continent conquered even if you have very few men to defend it at the border.
It's not much of a challenge. Please make it much harder to win on "very clever" (like slay is ....) Thanks.

_ more challenging maps _
Here are a few maps that I don't often beat in a small amount of moves
(I consider a quick map one I conquer in less than 30 moves)
--- you may or may not find them more of a challenge, good luck !
Blockers, by Mike Crush
Trillian Way, by Mike Crush
Space, by Mike Crush

Purple, by Mike Crush
Splasharoo, by Mike Crush
King Of The Hill, by Rob Werhand
Swirl, by JeffS
There are many more maps which present fun or strategic challenges,
these are just some that I find myself reloading when I don't want
a 'quick' game.

Thanks Crush !
I had downloaded all sorts of maps. Then I deleted some because of bad graphics. Recently, I played Pyramid which (by Yourself I believe ...) and beat it easily.
Some years ago, I purchased "Mission Risk" and I must say it still gives me pleasure to play it because it seems more 'intelligent' than Conquer.
As I said, the main hortcoming in Conquer is that, at whatever level of intelligence, the computer opps seem to prefer to take a card form the lowest adjacent defense instead of breaking a continent, which makes no sense.
Another 'abnormality' is the fact that one could just add 3 soldiers each turn on say 2-3 territories and never attack anyone else and .... still win in 1-2 turns at the end of game.
I cannot notice much of a difference in the play according to the various personalities. All players appear to play the same way : BADLY ! lol

player file
have you tried to also tweak the players file?
you can change the settings for the computer
player from 1-10 + the very clever setting....
1 is like nice to humans 10 is very nasty to humans...
plus try some different games settings...
such as armies, starting positions
less armies for cards...etc...
try my one map khoras i made it so you can't
see whats going on all over the map so
you have to add in some "footwork" scrolling to see
what the computer is doing which every once
in awhile catches ya off guard...
another one i dont make a "contineint"
all one mass i break it up and make it
hard to hold plus low army value....
we are linear creatures to a degree so
people tend to make maps too linear
i do it myself...so i've tried to make
some wierd ones, some realistic ones
some annoying ones, i have about 8...
my WWW site is below this comment on the button

_ to LEON & SID _
Leon - no problem about the map suggestions, you're welcome.
Did you try playing any that I mentioned yet ?
Sid - I've played your Khoras map a few times now. The first time I
loaded the map I thought someone had lost it
but as you said,
the inability to see the entire structure really adds to the battle !
Keep'em coming!
I haven't created any new maps in many months, not even sure if I
made any in 2004, but I'm going to find the time to create some more.
Leon - have you made any maps yet ?

Thanks for the kind words about the maps Sid !
I Appreciate it.
As for the Map Editor by John Fowler, I have downloaded it and
will give it a try. I'm surprised him and Sean haven't inked a deal yet !
Glad you enjoyed the maps, I've created quite a few of the BLOCK
oriented maps - I like the strategy they pose.
I have a few new ideas, but they're more 'back to basics'
maps.
Thanks again for the cool quotes,
hope to see some new maps from your side soon too !

Not to easy.
Try random setup and random placement. This makes the first ten or so turns rather hairy. Alot of the time the set-up creates nearly un-winnable positions.
The other aspect of the randomness is; it forces each game to be completely different, often times forcing you to change your style in order to win.

sometimes the only way to win is to hand in 3 cards quickly to get the 15 boost,
and then use it to conquer a continent and defend the key positions.
