About Conquest Maps

So far there are over 300 maps for Conquest.

So, which ones do you prefer? And why?

Which is the toughest map? And which the easiest one?

Which is the one with better graphics? Which one is really unsightly?

well i tried to get a map contest going once but caught so much flak
for the rating system i gave up....

there is another thread that covers this topic pertty much...
here: http://www.easymessageboard.com/forums/ ... c.php?t=16

i think a flame war would start cause no one will agree
on a rating/rank system...what one guy likes another wont...

another game i know has something similar and now
a number of "elected" players decide which maps
get seen and which do not...it gets ugly..and thier
"review" speed takes 12 months or longer.....i think
over the last 6 years i've seen 10 new maps in that game
thats how discriminating it gets...

By "rating system" I mean a system allowing players to give, for every map available for download, an opinion about its overall quality and its difficulty level. Well, I belive that such a rating system, now that we have so much maps, would be very useful. That's why:
1 - Players could avoid too easy or too difficult maps.
2 - Players would be able to avoid bad maps.
3 - Good maps won't get lost among the others.
4 - It could be interesting for map creators to know what do players think about their maps.

That topic was mainly about the making of new maps:
_CRUSH_ wrote:This thread is for those interested in creating MAPS for Conquest, HELP with making maps, and sharing maps they've created.

So I preferred to start a new topic to talk about players' preferences and comments about the already available maps.

maybe if you did a straight NUMERIC VOTE
system like this it would be marginally okay:

http://www.garrettsites.net/bzmaps/

written i PHP i beileve..

but if you allow comments you'll eventually
be asking for alot of trouble it always happens
someone will leave flaming comments
which is a bad idea as a map author gets
hit with comments that are unesseary and
that he can't respond too other then removing his map..

as per your comment:

see you've already started labeling maps as "bad"
thats not neccesary nor very conducive to map making...

or you could add a rating button for difficulty...
easy medium hard impossible...this would be somewhat nuetral
then the map page could have a button to sort by diffculty...

or make it even more simple every IP# gets
1 vote and vote for your favorite map...kinda
like the poll system...then the ones with the
most votes stays at the top of the map page
then it remains a nuetral "friendly" no flames
system...

I posted three maps here and got very little in the line of comments about them. I've nearly finished a fourth (it's in testing and final graphic touch up) but I'm not sure if I'll even bother to post it.

That's more or less what I meant, sid6.7! :D
Just imagine it with an additional column for the difficulty level, and that's what I'd like to see as the download page for Conquest maps!

sid6.7 wrote:or you could add a rating button for difficulty...

:D Yes! :D
(yet, wouldn't an odd number of options, either 5 or 3, be better? :?)

sid6.7 wrote:but if you allow comments (...)

I'd love the ability to add comments, but I see that it would become too difficult to manage... :(
Also, Sean is very busy, so he probably wouldn't find the time to develop such a thing!

sid6.7 wrote:see you've already started labeling maps as "bad"

Sad to say this, but I think a few maps really deserve this term.

I don't think this would be a good idea, since new maps always appear and one's preference could change. Also, the IP address usually changes when you just disconnect and then reconnect again, so it couldn't be used... It would be cool if the forum accounts could be used!

I like Ekij's Di'Mul Jar and Twin Volcano maps very much!
Yet, I visited that site for the first time just some minutes ago and, even if I had known of it before, I probably wouldn't have sent any email to comment them! While, if I had had to just click a rating button, I'd have already rated them a thousand times!

well if it really is only a diffculty rating then
i would change my vote to yes :D

anything else gets included i'll stay with no...

i think with phpbb you can tie things to the
user database..there is another online game
that does this as part of their multi level
anti-cheat program...it seems to work so far...

alots of coding i imagine...

With only our two votes, this is not going to be relevant!... :?... :(...
It seems that this topic is not of so much interest! :?

Maybe most people does only play with the maps shipped with the game?

probably not... i think its more like i said there wont be
much interest in rating maps..many folks download and
make maps for seans map section so there is alot of
activity already there....

i supose you could start your own web page similar
to fighter_aces CM page for maps and such that would do it
then post a link here...

It is something I've already thought about, but I don't know how many people would prefer to download the maps from my site rather than from Sean's. A site with maps rated by difficulty would be useful, but would first need some players coming to it to do the first rating - and, how many would be interested in doing that? It's not like CM Ships, where Sean's page is almost useless in its current state.

your right his page is pertty good.. so far lots of people download maps
there...but you could try...you can always take it down if no one shows
make it as simple as possible to upload and rate difficulty so you dont
have to spend alot of time coding and the noobies can understand it...

i'll promise to submit one if you do...then i'll see what
happens for a bit before i'll submit more...i have a buddy
that has 2 maps i could probably get him to try also...or
submit his 2 for him..

I think a 'more useful map download page' could catch on.
I downloaded quite a few of the Conquest maps from Seans page but I play very few of them, I found most of them were of rather poor quality.

Some way to see the map before you download it (shift it to the correct directory and unzip it) or at the very least a ranking system could prove very popular.

However a site like that takes a bit of time and effort to maintain (just ask the person running the CM ships page (not mine, I only post my own ships)). Sean clearly doesn't have the time (and we'd probably rather he spend his time improving the games and writing new ones anyway), but if you have the time, go ahead, what have you got to lose?

The only thing I fear is that once you have the 'top ten maps' it will be very difficult for a new map to get onto this list as few people will download an unranked map to try it out and rate it.

yeah that could be a problem...
we'll have to see what happens
after 3 months or so of rating
i dont think he means to have
unranked maps though does he?
everything would get ranked eventually
i myself have tried over half the maps
we currently have at one point or the other...

my personal solution is for example
if the levels say have 6 levels of difficulty
i wouldn't give the top rate to anyone
or i never give less then the medium level
for the item...

IE...
easy
beginner
intermediate
experienced
expert
mind boggling

IE....
i'd never give an mind boggling rate or
everyone would at least get a
intermediate rate so that any map
would'nt go to far one way or the other...

thats my own personal way to create balance
not nessesary valid to everyone...
