Boring - Tedious

Tedious is the better word for it... I'm making converted civilian ships, fitted out with appropriate armaments and such, but it takes forever and isn't incredibly accurate to keep going back and forth to try to remake the default ships. Here's a request, Sean, make the civilian(military too!) ships that come with CM exportable or able to be duplicated so that I can make MacGyvered fighting vehicles from some of them. I've got a neat idea for configuring the water tanker as a heavy bomber, but that can only be done if I can make a decent replica.

If all else fails, I am going to try and hack my .dat file and see what kind of damage I can do and force myself to reinstall and lose all my unexported ships! Hehe!

Lets keep the default ships being the deafult ships.
Make your own shapes for your own designs.

Traditionally, in times of war, peoples who could not afford to build weapon systems from scratch used civilian technology and strapped weapons to it. For example: "Technicals" are pickup trucks with heavy machine guns, light cannons, and rocket launchers fixed to them, the first combat pilots were flying planes that were basically civilian aircraft, the difference being the pilot having access to shotguns, pistols, and other handheld weapons which he fired at the enemy. Throughout history, maritime trade ships were either conscripted into service or issued paperwork allowing them to raid the ships of other nations. In many science fiction works, future starships and other spacecraft are often civilian in nature, but armed with a wide array of weapons for defense and, in time of war, combat. In other instances, equipment has been designed or modified to not appear to be a threat until the enemy was upon it. As with the ship I designed based on the light hospital, being careful to keep to similar performance and component allocation specs, House Call, in real space combat, there are advantages to be had in having decoys and unobtrusive armed escorts.

I realize the AI knows these ships I design in this fashion are just my wingmen, but it adds to the satisfaction and makes for a more imaginative scenario. I have dozens of my own unique ships, most fitting into a storyline where Earth(Terra, Sol, etc.) quickly found themselves outnumbered by the four in-game races and managed to forge a neutral status, where Terran designed and often Terran built vessels are often used to arm the belligerent factions. I like having a backstory, and having these civilian converts would really add some depth, if only in my mind.

Just think it'd be neat to see four armed water tankers release a swarm of Plectrons into a convoy of cargo ships!

Yeah, plus I'd really love to fly some civvy ships because the designs are neat. I'd love to blast enemies away with a combat fual tanker ;)
