Edit the Pre-Built ships?

Post by jftsang » Thu Sep 27, 2007 11:06 pm

Is there any way to edit the built-in ships?

Is there any way to include your own ships into the game?

Is there any way to edit missiles?

1. No, you can't do that

2. Yes, but you can only spend one third of your credits on any one ship. Otherwise people would just buy one huge ship instead of a squadron

3. No

OK, question 2 wasn't phrased well.

What I meant to ask was whether the computer will use your ships.

Custom designed ships are NOT used by the AI player. The ships that are used by the AI are in the SHIPS tab in the ship designer. Any player designed ships go in the Custom tab and are available only to the player and then only if he has enough money to purchase one.

There is a good case to add a few more ships to the SHIPS tab so the AI player will be better able to deal with missions over 170. As it is today, you can get enough high end custom ships once you pass mission 170 so that you are essentially unbeatable. The only way you die once you reach that level is through doing something ridiculous like flying into a blade of plectrons.

I have built custom ships that the AI can use. This was done with Sean's permission and using a specially modified version of the program he provided. Please do NOT contact Sean for the program, it is strictly for beta testing the code. The beta software uses its own internal settings and can wipe out your existing designs and commanders. It is purely for testing purposes.

If you would like to change the way the program handles custom ships, please post your request here on the forum and Sean can reply at his discretion.

We certainly could do with an AI scripter.

So a lot of folks want a way to get the enemy to use their custom ships. Well, here is your chance, but a GREAT BIG CAUTION first. Do this at your own risk. I'll tell you how, but if you goof it up, caveat emptor.

Start Critical Mass and export any ships you want to have available in the new Designs.dat file. Before you export them, check that the "used by race" check boxes are all checked. You must export each ship that you want available whether for enemy use or for your custom ships list. Very Important, if you have a game in progress, you must import all ships that are currently used in that game, otherwise it can cause problems when you start that game up. Exit Critical Mass and go to the directory where the game program files are stored.

Copy your existing Designs.dat file and place that copy someplace safe. My preference is to copy and then paste it into the Critical Mass directory and then re-name it as Designs.sav. If you do this, you will have a copy of your designs file to go back to when and if you decide to quit using this modified version. The Designs.dat file can be found in the main Critical Mass directory.

Save a copy of this modified Designs.dat file onto your computer in the Critical Mass directory so that it replaces the old file. http://www.selectedplants.com/miscan/Designs.dat and here is another file which is for those who want to add a bunch of their own ships. http://www.selectedplants.com/miscan/Designs2.dat Both of these files contains the standard pre-built ships that were originally included in Critical Mass. As an fyi, the internal ships MUST remain in the file because they are hard coded into various missions. If you use the second file, it must be renamed Designs.dat in the Critical Mass directory on your computer and must replace the existing Designs.dat file as per the above directions.

Now start Critical Mass and import 5 ships that you want the enemy to be able to use. The limit is 5 and they MUST be the first 5 that you import. Once they are imported, you will NO LONGER be able to edit them. Now import any further custom ships you want in your game. These will be fully editable and can only be used by the player. Note that if you use the second designs.dat file, you will be able to import about 16 of your custom ships. Be careful, once you import them, they can't be manipulated any further. You can always go back to the replacement Designs.dat file and start over, but that is a pita, so please be careful to start with.

You heap big ugly Indian if you pull this off!

For anyone trying to copy the designs.dat file from my website, please try again in a couple of days. My site is being migrated to a new server.
