Backing up/restoring your game files in CM 4.0b

Post by targo » Sun Jan 02, 2005 8:55 am

Some ppl have expressed frustration over the fact that you can't restore your game file after you've been killed, and a one stray missile can thus negate hours of play.
What you need to do to get around it:

1) Back up your game file in a different directory
2) Also back up RollOfHonour.dat (as this keeps track of who is dead)
3) Make a note of the value in the registry key value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Critical Mass (as this stores the checksum of RollOfHonour.dat to prevent people from performing step 2).

To restore, simply restore these two files and set the registry value to the old number.

Note that I take no responsibility whatsoever if you happen to ruin your computer and/or playing experience by following these steps, and they are provided for educational purposes only.

Surely that "one stray missile" thing is the whole point?

If this is what you think, no one is forcing you to use my suggestion.
Other people might have different ideas of what they find fun about this game though.

This method is useful for trying out your ship designs for workability without fear for loss of your favourite commander.
