Well, said ship without any shield whatsoever was actually my favourite at the time. I lost it to a harddisk crash, though. At 102-ish credits I could afford it after one or two missions and would just stick to it until 25 or 30.

well...i'd say 3 launchers is a must for a good ship. and what do you mean by "best" designs?

I have a lot of fun with an ship with just one radar and wich have only daycorn, but it's not my best game ever, and it is not the ship that I usualy use

I've also taken to flying cheaper ships lately - you can actually make something pretty decent for under 90 credits, and it makes earning gold crosses a piece of cake.

I didnt know how to use the forum, and I started a new Topic.
I designed a new version of ships.
Good turning, visibility, relatively cheap, great firepower.
I wonder how nobody had my idea before.
They cost less than 130 credits.
Also I have a series of extremely cheap ships.
Give me a little bit of time.

thurst isn't useful I think. About 30 is the minimum required, but you don't need so much thurst. As all the ship have the same max speed (wich should be modified I think), basic acceleration skill are suffisant.
