Hi;

I actually bought Sean's game pack to play Fire Fight, but since playing CM, I haven't played any of the other games yet!

I want to say thanks to all of you who have posted, because there is such a huge amount of info. and tips for this game. Super helpful!

I am playing the Zyan, about to start mission #13 (attack a star base), have made it to Commander, and have I think 17 kills.

Used a 'super watcher' for the first two missions, then after reading many of your posts, designed a 111 point ship (the Manitou), and have been using that mostly.

I am going over more posts, to help me pick the proper ships for attacking a star base.

God, this game is wicked!

Cheers to all!

The more firepower you carry, the better, with that many targets out there.

To attack a starbase on mission 13, you will have to go direct for the starbase and ignore all other targets except possibly the turrets surrounding the base.

Wicked? Nah. It is ADDICTIVE!

It's going to be hard for me to focus on the starbase, but you are right, that is the point of the mission.

I have been keeping track of which wingman ships have been doing the best for me over the missions, and try and max. out how many ships I can get for this mission.

I have had a couple of close calls, (pursued by a Heathen in one), but the starbase mission has me wondering if this is the last for my guy.

I am not one to leave a fight easily :)

Be aware that attitude is what gets most great commanders killed.

Well, I got smoked like a fine cigar in mission #13.

Didn't even fire a shot!

When in straight at a medium turret, and I blew up shortly after.

So yes, maybe I should alter my attitude, and play more cautiously.

Enemy turrets can be surprisingly formidable.

When you're defending friendly ones, however, they're completely useless.

Turret are dangerous, the better taktik that I have found is to do circle.

I've actually had quite some success against turrets by going straight for them. Keeping them centered you can easily pop off two plectrons which should do most of them in. After firing you can either take the chance of trying to fly through the debris (ends badly if it survives your strike) or alter the course slightly to pass right next to the turret. Works fine for me.
Just don't attack them head on, if you come in on them and they are facing you, give it a turn towards one of the other turrets or fly past altogether. Come back in a wide circle and repeat. 'In and out, not round about'.

If you can go directly between two turrets, they may hold their fire until you get enough distance to have a chance at dodging the missiles.

Well, one thing I am starting to clue into, is to stop doing what I often do...

Go straight in, get into the enemy's range, pop off a couple of missiles at the enemy, then generously turn around, exposing my weakest side... insane!

But so much logical, you just have to use your brain, and all will be easy

Turrets are easy to kill, provided you have some patience.

The key is that they lead their target (ie. you). If you start out flying perpendicular to them, they will turn to aim in front of you. This exposes their side, which has 3-5 times less armor than the front.
If you turn towards it now, you should be able to destroy the turret with a single volley (2 plectrons is usually enough on all except the "super" turrets).

The same technique works brilliantly against Radar Bases, Observatories, and Transmitters, which all have much less armor on the sides than front, and which also "aim" infront of you.

If there is asteroid near the turret it's more easy, and if you are in a asteroid field...
