Battlestar Galactica

Post by cavemaniac1 » Thu May 26, 2005 2:39 pm

Here's a thought I had while watching the new Battlestar Galactica TV series:

Wouldn't it be cool if there were MASSIVE ships/instalations to attack, where instead of completely destroying it you could knock out various aspects of it...

...like hangar decks on carriers so no more enemy fighters could be launched, or damaged ones dock for repair

...like mobile turrets mounted on a huge ship - taking them out would leave that side vulnerable, exposing their engines/command deck etc...

...like the above on a huge asteroid base, along with surface mounted radar/fuel depots/transmitters etc...

The above is similar to the Deathstar idea posted in another topic...
I realise that most of this is 'pie in the sky' and outside of the possibilities of CM as we know it, I just wondered what others thought of the idea - something to considder for CM2??!!??

Another thought is that Sean orriginally programmed CM as a realtime game, but the problem was launching different missiles with the keyboard while wrestling with a joystick - modern Joystick technology now allows a stick with up to 8 fire buttons... Nah! I prefer it turn based!
The one thing that we learn from history is that we don't learn from history...

Yeah. You can't call it Critical Mass 2, there already is a Critical Mass 2. This is Critical Mass 4. It would be like, either Critical Mass 5 or something cool-sounding like Critical Mass-X or Critical Mass-Omega or something.

Meltdown sounds catchy. What about Hypercritical Mass or Critical Mass 9000?

Oooohhhh!!

I like 'Hypercritical Mass'!

Here's a thought though, are we up to Critical Mass 4, or Critical Mass 1, version 4? Isn't the current version a development of the original rather than a completely new entity?

Yes, the current version is still based on the very first version although there's probably hardly a line of code that is still the same from the original version.

I just call it Critical Mass 4.0

The idea of big ships made from multiple parts sounds interesting though...

And structures(space stations, fuel depots, etc)...

It'd add more scale to the game, since the warheads imply the ships are massive, like small planets, but their handling is, well, amazing.

So, technically, this is Critical Mass 1.4?

Anyway, more of a scale would be nice. It would be nice to be able to create and fight bigger and smaller ships. It would make it more dramatic and realistic. Powerful ships would look powerful if they were really big.

It'd be cool to have real small ships carrying smaller, weaker warheads, but being harder to hit...

1.4 NO 4.0

1.1 from 1.0 would be a minor update (with letters making them even smaller, patches)

1.0 to 2.0 would be a major update

A further thought - larger ships to fly, complete with...

REAR TURRETS!!

Playing Crimson Skies, I love it when flying larger aircraft when my (computer controlled) rear gunner starts popping off at pursuing enemy.

Chasing down one of those would be a challenge!

Immagine building huge battleships with multiple turrets - either under player or computer controll - and now immagine attacking it!

Or defending a crippled one...

...With another one coming into attack it!

There are so many possibilities for a sequel or major update to CM...

Non-Missile weapons for turrets, mines, weapons with area affect, electronic warfare packages, larger ships/complexes, carriers that can launch interceptor craft, bigger battles with more range of ship size, some kind of limited, short range hyperspace jump, energy shields that can be repaired unlike the normal armor on a ship, and the list goes on...

Of course, they seem a lot cooler to us, since we wouldn't have to do the coding, heh.
