Multiplayer type thing

Post by Old Man Johnson » Wed Jun 08, 2005 11:05 pm

Well, since we don't have network, I was thinking it might be fun to try the next best thing (or maybe not). Anyway, what I was thinking is that we could have some sort of regularly scheduled contest. We could create a new commander at that time, and see who gets farthest. We'd post our stats when we die here or something. Now, there's a lot of room for cheating with this idea, but if someone's desperate enough for attention to cheat on something like this, there is no hope for him.

Now, this is way far from perfect, so if anyone has any suggestions or whatever I'd really appreciate hearing them.

By the way, I vision it looking something like this:

OMJ:

Contestants
(Forum Name--Commander)

OMJ--Stupid commander
BoxZone--Boxzone Man
Sean--Uber guy
Steve--Steve
Cheater X--I cheat
(Random choice, don't get mad)

OMJ:
I got to mission -0. Man, That was lame.
Sean:
I got to mission 44. Woo hoo
BoxZone:
I got to mission 20. I got a lots Gols Crosses
Steve:
I got to mission 99. Man! I was so close to 100!
Cheater X:
I got to mission 92000102! I had liek 10589127591276 kills!!!!!!
Everyone:
You suck

Forget the Cheating Guy. Anyway, I think that would be cool, and afterwards everyone could talk about it or something.

EDIT: Eyaghhg! That's one long post! For me, anyways.

I think that sounds like a fun idea. Most of my pilots never get past mission 4 or 5 (mortality rate is high early on). It might force me to play more carefully if I only have one go at it. :) If we kept some sort of rankings doing one pilot per week for a few months, it would reveal who can consistantly play well rather than just having one lucky pilot survive for a while (like me).
If I may say so, life is a game, and there's so much to do and so few turns.

Sounds like a good idea! It would be interesting to see how risk takers compare to the cautious. Of course being cautious is always best in the first few missions, once you've got some armour on you, then you can start to take some risks.

Each week I could try a new style of fighting and see how bad I do! :)

Next week: Ships made entirely out of command points with a missile launcher and two engines! (or perhaps not :D )

So...are we actually going to do this? If so, we should probably set up a time. Any suggestions about that?

Also, about keeping track of stats, I was thinking about keeping track of the following (for each person):

Total Missions
Average Missions
Average Win Ratio
Total Kills
Average Kills
Average Kills per Mission
Total number of each kind of medal

Anything else I should keep track of?

Missile accuracy would be interesting to track, but people would need to remember to write it down after each mission since I do not believe it is stored anywhere.

Mmm...yeah, I think that must have been why I didn't put it up. Oh well. we can try it out and if people keep forgetting we'll just take it off.

How often do you think we should have one? I was thinking once a week, or maybe a little more often.

If more often, how about sometime on Sundays and Wednesdays? Those seem like nice even times. Or maybe even one every day...? That might be too many. Once a week also works. I don't know.

Also, I think I'll keep track of how many times a player has participated. That'll make some of the records more accurate (like if a player played once and got 150 kills, and another player played 900 times and got 1 kill every 2 times). Of course, you could just look at the average...but keeping track of participation also makes it easier to calculate that average...

OMJ,

I'm up for it, I expect I get through about one commander a week, my 'knees' on the survivability curve are at about 20 missions and 40 missions.

If we all post our commanders here it's going to get a real mess, we need someone (such as yourself) to compile the results and post on a web page somewhere.

Twice a week is too frequent, defiantly for me anyway. Considering that a commander could survive for many missions, maybe up to 60 or beyond. 5 minutes per mission makes that 300 minutes or 5 hours. (of course, he could die mission one! Making it take 2-5 minutes! :D)

Its taken me months on and off to get my current commander to mission 150, where, now having the best ship available, I've stopped for a while.

We really need a cut off point, or its only a matter of time before someone gets past the 60 mission boundary and continues on to ridiculus numbers of missions. Something like 100 missions max I guess.

How about something like a few missions a day, and a restart for those who die at the end of the week. Those who don't die continue. Then we could post updates of how our day (or for those with less time, week) went.

For example:

Monday

Steve: Played 3, kills 7 but died on the last one, damn I'll take a command point next time! (I can build ships without command points, long story!)

OMJ: Played 60, kills 112 man i really need to sleep

Sean: Played 0, sorry guys, busy busy busy programing all these games

Styro: I'm still dead, can't wait for that respawn

That sounds like a really good idea. That's definitely the way to go for me.

Maybe we could combine the idea for a CM ships and missions site with this if you are making an account...

Alright. I signed up a site: www.geocities.com/ubervideodisc

However, I haven't really done a whole lot of work with it. I need some time. Also, I was thinking maybe to have the weekly respawn day on Sunday, just because it's the beginning of the week. Sound good?

So the idea is that we start a pilot on Sunday (or thereafter) and see how far we can get him/her before Saturday night and then post or email the results?

I think it might be interesting to start a forum topic each Sunday and each person can reply who is taking on the challenge and then post again either when their pilot gets blown up (most likely by a wingman) :) or after their last mission if they survive the whole week. That way we can know for sure who is participating and when everyone is out.

Or is Sunday just the re-spawn, so pilots who are still living continue on to the next week until they hit a predetermined number of missions (like 60)?
