Questions

Post by qwas » Thu Nov 03, 2005 8:11 pm

If I make or download a custom ship, can a non-human squadron (enemy or ally) use those ships?

Also:

What's the point of having Command Centres? What does it give to the ship?

Non-humans can use everything... and they do...

More seriously: custom ships can only be used by your squadron (viz. for your personal ship and your wingmates' ones) provided you select a custom ship for each of them of course. Other squadrons (enemy or ally) always use standard ships.

You NEED at least one Command Centre to stay alive. As soon as you don't have an more CC, you're destroyed (and dead unless you have either ejected or hyperspaced).
When they hit you, missils turn your components (first shields, then internal ones) into rubbish... until the last one of your CC is destroyed. At this very moment, your ship also is destroyed (that's the reason why good ships have several CC...).
Each turn the program checks whether you still have at least one operational CC. Thus, if you try and use a ship that has no CC at all (a custom ship of your own that you designed without any CC), you will be allowed to play the very first turn and then the first time you click "End Turn", your ship will be found not having at least one CC and it will be destroyed (and your commander as well).

Although, of course, even if you have two yellow front shields and three command centres, sometimes one missile hit will kill you  ...

But yeah, you should always have at least two command centres in any custom ship, imho, because otherwise unless you eject every time you see a missile you are going to die to a lucky shot one of these days ...

Command Centres, Is it true that all starndard ships only have 1?

No, and you can easily check this out: you click File then Design ships then the grey Ships index. There are 52 different standard combat ships. 22 of them have 1 CC, 30 have 2 CC.
A starbase (super) has 8...

The game checks for command centres on missile hit, not on a turn by turn basis

i would aim for a couple of command centres, to allow for emergencies on your rise to the top - and if you ever lose all your shields, its probably time to get busy with the hyperspace

maybe when you are approaching all yellow shields you should ever think about having just one.

Steve is right; you won't die when you hit End Turn, you'll die when a missile hits you. Even if you have 8 Super Shields on each side.

Should have checked this out by myself before writing...  (think I've read all this before in a thread). Actually I just tried to design a custom ship WITHOUT any CC and the program didn't accept it. A window popped out which said: "You must have at least one command unit." :!:
Steve's remark must be right... Well, at least I guess. Seems logical anyhow...

Just this once you'd better not borrow... you know what!

To build a ship without a command center, fill up one of the sides and then move your command center there--it will go away. Then you can do whatever you want.
