AI Personality Research

Post by bebop » Wed Jan 25, 2006 6:49 pm

Hi everyone.

I completed a simple test of the AI personalities. I played 50 games against each of the 8 computer opponents. To more or less stardandize the games, I used the same opening setup for my pieces for all 400 games. There are some differences between the strength of the AI personalities, at least against my style of play. The results follow...

Personality W Ave Moves per win
Spike 47 (94%) 160
Bob 47 (94%) 160
Max 46 (92%) 176
Florian 45 (90%) 161
Pamela 44 (88%) 161
Bruno 44 (88%) 157
Patrick 42 (84%) 142
Gloria 38 (76%) 167

Fastest Game was vs. Patrick @ 36 moves

Has anyone else similar studies? Is Gloria the best overall, or is she just more effective vs. my style of play?

I have it standardized by keeping them all at the same win % (and obviously the harder ones beat me more so it takes more games to get them to that same win percentage). I'll start with Patrick, play him until I up one percent on that record, then move to the next person, etc.

After the first few games and trying out the defenses I generally stuck with one across the board for most of the games.

I'm at 86% on all them right now.

For me the order from hardest to easiest is (with tied ones sharing a number obviously):
1) Florian (148/172)
2) Patrick (129/149)
3) Bruno (62/72)
4) Spike (43/50)
5) Pamela (37/43)
6) Max (25/29)
7 & 8) Gloria and Bob (13/15)

..so form me Gloria was the easiest (but then again I've played the least with her as well).

I've standardized nothing, but I usually play an all out flank attack, with a "hail mary" flag position, and go hard. I find Spike the toughest because he plays like a lunatic - not unlike the style I usually adopt.
Sometimes I just play to get the quickest win numbers as low as I can

Personality Games W% Ave Moves per win / fastest game.

Spike 51 (90%) 101 / 21.
Bob 34 (97%) 102 / 26.
Max 13 (92%) 118 / 34.
Florian 25 (92%) 109 / 37.
Pamela 27 (100%) 107 / 25.
Bruno 14 (92%) 108 / 39.
Patrick 46 (42%) 99 / 19.
Gloria 17 (94%) 144 / 42.

Patrick 100% Best 126 avg 231
Pamela 96% Best 176 avg 249
Florian 93% Best 167 avg 253
Max 96% Best 164 avg 238
Bruno 100% Best 88 avg 235
Gloria 96% Best 147 avg 257
Bob 87% Best 64 avg 212 - this guy for me is nuts, I thrash him all the time but then he plays a blinder or I get cocky and he kills me.
Spike 96% (just lost for the first time then to him) Best 149 avg 221

played them all 32 times each so far...

My games take longer than the others I think because I must be a little sadistic and want to wipe them completely from the board and do wanker things like take the flag with the spy. Great game, good for practicing and trying out new set ups for playing in the flesh. It would be great if some site was set up where you could meet and play others online using this game in particular. Other computer Stratego games don't come close to this in terms of user freindlyness, graphics, playability. Thanks Sean, great work.

Hopefully we'll see The General in the 2008 Stratego AI World Championship!
