Mortars - use in groups.

Post by JeanBoule » Tue Jan 08, 2008 5:20 am

I have been playing away for a while and did not seem to find my mortars doing anything very useful.

I decided to try creating mortar sections of three light mortars.

This gives a more suppressive rate of fire onto the enemy I would think.

When an enemy gun is located, I put a mortar section onto it. They respond a lot quicker than artillery, and there is a good chance the gun will be destroyed before it can kill a frightful number of my poilus.

They can engage targets quite close to my own troops.

The problem is that they tend to shoot off their ammo and run out quite early in the game. I do not find that the cease-fire button works as I would like. The only way I have found to stop them is to leave them back out of range. This doesn't work with heavy mortars because they have enough range to shoot just about anywhere on the map.
Voila du boudin!

Agree on all points!

I use a minimum of two mortars, when I use them, and sometimes four (just for the hell of it, it depletes direct fire units a lot to spend so much on mortars though).

I would also like them to only fire on my command. They do waste their ammo too much on single infantrymen when they should conserve for guns, HMG's, and infantry concentrations.

The ability to get fire support QUICKLY is invaluable.
