Sadly, if you search for "slay" (all lower case) it doesn't even show up in the first page. How annoying. Hopefully it will rise to the top soon enough!

Just bought it and am looking forward to my first game.

Configuring iPhone Slay?

Post by greg staten » Fri Feb 27, 2009 3:28 pm

Okay. Stupid (hopefully) question. How do you get to the game options? For example, how does one turn off the sound (I prefer the sound off for games by default and would rather not put the whole phone on vibrate.) Also, can you change to a different tile set, etc as you could in the Windows Mobile version?

Thanks!

I haven't added settings yet - I'll work on that for the next version.

You also can't change the tile set yet as instead of just using a plain coloured hexagon I use a textured bitmap for the hexagon so I can't easily re-colour that. What I'll do is create new sets of hexagons with the colours you get on the Windows version and do it that way.

Please let me know any other things you'd like for the next version!

A few thoughts from someone that is both an old fan of the Windows version and an iPod touch user.

The dotted red line that shows possible moves is a great addition, and I'll miss that in the Windows version.

Anti-aliasing should be a priority for an update. The huts and men have a decent minimalist style to them, but the hex grid could definitely use a bit more attention. The white outline for a selected territory looks good, but the thin black lines are very jaggy looking. The iPhone/iPod touch has a very high res screen; use a few more pixels and make the most common type of line look good.

The textures on the hexes are very nice, and let you take in more at a glance, but the crosshatched dark green looks a bit out of place with the others. I'm not so fond of the water texture either.

I think that the Info and Help buttons would be better placed on the main screen, possibly to either side of the "Slay" title, rather than on the game screen. New players might want to see the help screen in-game, but the rules are not difficult to learn or remember. Anyone that knows the rules doesn't need access to either button in game, and that would make the interface cleaner.

The black background top bar would probably look better than the grey one, and I'm not sure if you even need it at all. That would give you a bit more room for the map.

Tapping the minimap to jump around the map would be handy.

Further down the road, the ability to turn the phone on its side and play in landscape would be nice.

So far, I'm quite pleased with this version of Slay. It's the same game that I fell in love with long ago, on the platform that I love now.

Oh, and posting a little release post over on the Touch Arcade forums will get you plenty of attention and feedback.

Plays really nice! A joy to be playing it again. One thing I do miss is the Large island / Small Island menu from my old palm version. It was great for playing on the move if you only want a short game.

I'll 2nd the request for anti-aliasing, the black edges are a little grating. I'd also love to see a subtle animation o the water background.

Buttons, info and help aren't really needed on the game screen, the game does a very good job of talking you through the basics when you first play.

I also don't think the map is needed, another hex game (Strategery) on iphone has a very nice method of showing you the entire map using the two finger pinch gesture, swipe your fingers together to zoom in, swipe them apart to zoom out to full map view, its easy, quick, makes good use of the multi-touch iphone's interface. Strategery isn't a patch on Slay for gameplay but its very well presented and professional.

The reason that the hexagons look a little anti-aliased is that the screen is actually zoomed in by 30%. I used the same size graphics from the Windows version but I found it was a bit tricky to tap on the hexagon you wanted each time. Maybe that's just me though!

I've figured out how to do the pinch zoom and that's working in Conquest now so as soon as that's out I'll come back and do an update to Slay to allow you to zoom in and out too. It'll be really easy to do as all the code to draw the game at any zoom position is there already.

One idea I thought of was when you click End Turn the game automatically zooms out so you can see as much as possible and then zooms back in to your last setting when it's your turn again. It might look cool or it might give you a headache. I'm not sure.

Regarding the size of the hexagons, I actually think they are still too small. One big frustration I've been having is that I either grab the wrong guy or drop him in the wrong place. I'd love to be able to zoom the map in further to eliminate this.

BTW, I think I found a bug and have a recipe to recreate it. Due to the previously mentioned frustration, I abandoned a map (surrendered) and started it over. Within three moves hitting End Game with a player that could still be moved caused the game to surrender instead of ending the turn. I was dropped back to the map list and had to start the game again. Unfortunately, once it happens it will keep on happening until you exit the app and re-launch it. Very frustrating!

I'm really enjoying Slay on the iPhone, but would definitely enjoy it more if it was easier to select the right man and properly place them!

Thank you so much for porting this to the iPhone, I've been really looking forward to it and now it's here I'm one happy camper :)

I do tend to echo the size of hex issue, generally I get it right, but there are times where it's a bit awkward and a working zoom would probably fix that problem for me. Though doing a working zoom that anti-aliases all of the lines nicely would be rather nice too :)

I'll second the request for small as well as large maps, I used to really like the quick maps on the palm, they made for really neat puzzles.

Other than that, I've not really had any issues, the game plays really nicely.

Thank you so much.

The itouch version has a bug for me: I cannot move the highest piece, the barons. They are immovable, and so the game is unplayable.

I like these ideas, esp. seeing all the action. You could also show a zoomed in circle on selection, and then let go to select (like the typing area does).

Just came back on to mention this, I too cant move the Barons. I'm on a 3G iphone.

I too would be happy if the hexes were a little larger, I've had the odd problem selecting the right unit.

Oh and one other thing, its not necessarily a request, more something I've noticed myself doing a couple of times... for some reason I keep trying to swipe between pages on the map selection screen rather than using the buttons at the bottom, i think its because it reminds of the main iphone interface. To be honest though, since getting my iphone I keep trying to swipe and touch everything, I was doing it to my wife's Blackberry the other day and wondering why it wasn't responding

Just registered to provide some more feedback concerning Slay for the iPhone. I'm a new player who came across the game in a thread over on TouchArcade and deciding to purchase Slay. To be honest: as a life-long Mac user I never, ever dreamt that I would one day be posting on a Windows Games forum but here I am :D

Sean, I'm a newbie to Slay but I'm really enjoying it. Thanks for porting it to the iPhone!

Concerning the discussion of hex size: the pinch and zoom update sounds good. I too have had a bit of trouble selecting the right hex but suggest there might be alternative to making the hexes even bigger than they are now. What about simply highlighting the hex which corresponds to one's touch so that one can see where one is touching (or as someone suggested using the magnifying glass approach). I don't believe the hexes need to be bigger but some assistance is likely required to coordinate one's finger.

Also please consider Korviak's suggestion to start this discussion over on Touch Arcade. I do believe that there are MANY folks (in the main lurkers such as I) that would try the game with a bit more exposure.

Thanks for bringing this to iPhone!

I was able to play a little this morning after installing it and from reading some of the other posts I'm having the same issues. The surrender bug hit me even though I was ending a turn after I had previously surrendered the level to retry it. Also I would say almost 30% of the time I pick a hex on the screen it doesn't pick the one I wanted. Some kind of zoom would definitely be nice as my big fat fingers are much larger than my old stylus on my Pocket Pc. Some kind of way to even drag the player so I can make sure he's in the right hex would be cool. One option I'd like to see is to be able to turn the "nag" screen off after you hit "end turn" even if I have player I can move. Another thing if I remember on the pocket pc version is if I double or triple tap the current highlighted area it would automatically give me a peasant or spearman to place, I miss that. Other than that I'm loving this game. Keep up the good work Sean.

Loving the game on iPhone 3G - plays really well. I can confirm the Baron bug - once created it can't be moved.

I really like the sea texture and I don't need to drain my battery quicker by having it animated!

One difference from thePC version is that when the AI's offer their surrender and I refuse it, on the PC it takes several turns before being asked again and on the iPhone it comes up at the end of each turn - slightly irritating if you like to complete the map. Please could this either be an option or revert to the original behaviour.

Thanks - Iain
