Interesting...
I always assumed that you get promotions as you earn a certain number of credits, but obviously that isn't the case.
I have a game where I've flown 26 missions, failed just 1, with 6.23k/m kill rate, and got 22 Gold Crosses in the process - however, I'm still only at Captain rank (yes, I cheated a little by disabling some missions and making some others enabled from the start, but only because it's an experiment).
I must surely have more credits, and more kills than you had when you were promoted. The only things you can be ahead on are total missions, and mission wins. I guess that must be the most important factor.
Obviously medals do count for something though - I have a Commodore and a Captain who both died on mission 30, with 20 wins each.
My earliest Admiral died on mission 36 (must have been promoted before then, but I don't know when), and had 31 succesful missions.
