Hit by a missile after 'Mission Over' - First time ever!

Postby cavemaniac1 » Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:49 pm

I just got hit by a missile - which exploded - several seconds after the 'Mission Over' notification was displayed and control of my ship was locked.

A world first, or just the first time for me?

Fortunately, my ship wasn't badly damaged.

I seem to remember reading in one of these threads, ooooh, years ago now, that CM was programmed to deactivate missiles once control had passed from the pilot to prevent exactly this occurance.

In the past, I've had missiles pass straight through me after Mission Complete, but this is the first one to go off!

Having said that, with the thousands of missions I've flown and the missile count probably in the millions by now, it was probably just a matter of time!!

I think taht we have talk previously about this, a think it's fusion power that have said that missile are still active after mission end.
I need to write something, so i create that signature.

Never happened to me. I think the problem is not that missiles stay armed after the round ends, but rather that the rounds are supposed to end only if there are no active warheads around anymore. At least that has been my observation.

The round ends when all missile fuel is spent. So there are still hot warheads out there.

I have been killed by a stray plectron during the "mission over" phase. It is very frustrating because you can see it coming but you can't steer your ship away from it.

I've had allied forces die that way at the end of battles that sprawled, like big space wars or attack/defend planet. Missiles tend to move outward, so if you finish the combat in the center of the action, you're safer than if you're out to the edges.

Someone once suggested turning your ship over to the computers control - like an autopilot, using the same routines your wingmen use - at the Mission Over Message.

At the time it was purely a pride thing 'cos the writer hated his ship suddenly going 'dumb' after a brilliant mission, and flying straight into an asteroid!

Implementing the above suggestion would certainly allow your ship, now out of your control, to react to an incoming missile and give it a beter than even chance to dodge it.

As other people out there have commented, you're so right - at the end of the mission there can still be a surprising number of missiles drifting through the sector...
