Imitation: The sincerest form of flattery

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/373 ... val.Realms

(Link is correct but might need a bit of manual adjustment).

Apparently, it's a tarted up Slay.

Here is another version of the game. I"m thinking copyright problems on this one.

Yeah, the bloke from Slitherine Games got in touch with me to ask about licensing the name Slay for his version of the game. We couldn't agree on a deal so I thought that was the end of the matter. He hasn't done anything illegal by copying my game idea but I think it's a bit below the belt for one game developer to poach someone else's livelihood. Still, bet he's not too happy with some of the reviews he got:

"Although the core game is very similar to Slay, (mind you - AI doesn't seem quite as sharp)..."

"I was more enthusiastic about the game until I learned about Slay, which Conquest! Medieval Realms ?borrows? a lot of basic mechanics from."

That Matrix games version looks rubbish (I haven't played it), but it doesn't have the charm of Slay.

As for Wodan...that's blatant copyright infringement

I just tried the demo of this not knowing it was a ripoff and was stunned that they so cravenly stole the idea. It is pretty rubbish - almost all the original ideas are not good, and the good ideas not original. Although the different kinds of buildings are neat. Still, it's too clumsy and generally a crap game.

No one seems to have mentioned it on their forum. I believe I will.

A few years older, not much wiser, still playing slay from time to time. Have not played anything but the AI in a couple of years. Once in a while I post about days to win a given island and get a rash of "it can't be done". I kind of miss the days when you and the others had to gang up on me to beat me. The AI is really not that much of a challenge.

I'm still on yahoo, same ID as my handle here.

How is that brother of yours?

I think I remember participating in one of those ganging up sessions...

He's doing all right, not much time for games as he's got a "squeeze" and might be losing his job soon. He's still up there in the PNW. I'm still mucking about in cults - out on the East Coast now. Haven't used Yahoo in years. We should organize some old-timer rematches. Teach the kids some tricks.

There's even a copy on the AppStore now called Tactica. On his website he says it's based on a demo he saw of an Eve Online mini game (without realising the Eve guys paid me to license my code) and then notes on his website that someone has pointed out to him that his game just by coincidence has similar rules to Wodan.

Grrrrrrr......
