Re: Index of islands for Slay version 6.0

Postby rhaining » Tue Jun 20, 2017 6:01 pm

I don't play on PC but am curious what these numbers are. I assume it's some sort of mapping between map number and map name, but what is the 2nd number?

The first number is the numeric sequence of the islands. The second number is the internal number for that island. When playing an island, the PC version does not display the island name, it gives the internal number. I often want to refer back to the island by name since that is the way they have to be selected to play. With this index, the number and name are correlated. Also worth noting, the island names are not alphabetic. They are organized alphabetically by the first letter of the island name, but then within that group, they are more nearly random.

A few years ago, Sean wanted to organize the islands in terms of difficulty to complete. I sent him my slay.dat file showing the number of days to complete every island. He then built an index placing the islands in order with easiest first up to hardest last. This relationship has not been updated even though there were several changes to the AI which affected difficulty. The result is that the latest version of Slay is no longer in sequence by difficulty.

As an also ran bug just in case Sean is reading, the random selection algorithm when "New Challenge Game" is selected is NOT at all random. In fact, I've concluded that Sean is a closet Douglas Adams fan since island #42 (Alip) is chosen as the default about 90% of the time. It is after all the answer to "Life, the Universe, and Everything!"

Some day, I need to sit down and write pseudo code for a new AI that would play on a much higher difficulty than the current version. Handling of castles in particular is clunky and does not use significant strategy. If this were implemented, there is a good chance that about 30% of the islands would become unwinnable so maybe not such a good idea. Fibo #18 is unwinnable when played as #2 beige. That is the only island I can't beat with every possible player combination. It would be tough if 1/3 of the islands were similarly unwinnable.

Which reminds me, I need to load the latest versions of the games on my new computer and transfer my license. Sean, can you send me a link to the download file?

You sound experienced enough that you might actually know how the AI chooses moves on the hardest difficulty level. I'd love to know more precisely how it chooses it's moves. I went to the effort of writing a document and posting on this forum about what I think the AI does, but I can't always explain the AI's behavior. In particular, I really, really can't predict where the AI will place units when defending its territory, but OTOH, this is the least important aspect of AI behavior to predict because if you're at this point, you're likely able to crush the remaining opponents anyway. What I'd love to be able to predict better is where a strong opponent will attack/place his units.

This will sound strange, but even though I can almost always predict AI moves, I can't do it 100%. There is a subtle variation in the way the AI behaves that is behind part of it. For example, the man moved first by the human player is an input for the AI response. If you have 3 territories with a valid opening move, moving one or the other can get an entirely different response for some islands. This applies even if the exact identical moves are made and the only variable is which one was placed first. Most islands do not matter, the AI moves are the same regardless of how the human player opens. But for quite a few of them, particularly larger islands, the opening move can change the AI response. I found one island that was only winnable when a particular opening move was made and that move had to be one particular position. There is also an island that can be won with difficulty if opening moves are made, but is trivial to win if no moves at all are made on the first day. This is because making no moves allows one key AI player to be cut off to die on the 2nd day.

Playing HASH #115 today as player #5 medium green and found it to be a very challenging island. My first attempt won in 30 days, second in 29 days, and third in 21 days. It is arguably one of the best to play to challenge your skills.

I was curious on how you played as a player other than the one assigned to you... on both my Iphone version and steam version I see no way to do that.
