I can't understand the Gold cross

I can't understand the exact math involved in working out if you get a gold cross. It seems to me that only fighters are relevant, I've had a screen full of factories/turrets and got only the medal of hounor.

I've had a gold cross for killing two badguys before, and not got one for killing 4 single handedly, therefore im assuming that accuracy plays a major role as in the latter case, I used up most of my missiles.

The funiest thing is I got a gold cross by killing 4 enemy ships and a friendly turret with 6 missiles. Usually friendly kills seriously affect your reward, so does killing friendly non-fighters count for as little as killing enemy non-fighters does?

Can anybody explain? :?

Turrets don't count for much as they are quite easy to kill and non-fighter ships count even less. Mostly it's based on how much you kill relative to your ship's cost (so it's easier to get a good medal if you fly a worse ship). You also get credit for a successful mission and for a good accuracy rating.
