what do the different colours mean on the shooting like for example purple, green, orange and yellow?

It indicates the kind of weapon that will probably be used to execute your firing order. Yellow means rifles, orange means machine guns, purple means shells and grenades, red means flamethrower and green... well, no idea, haven't ever seen it.

red is enemy forces rifles, unless thats changed in the newer versions???

Well the actual shots aren't quite lines anymore anyway so I thought he referred to the lines drawn from your troops to the target when you are about to issue an order for covering fire.
