Networking CM
You know in the history of the games it said something about networking Critical Mass. In my opinion that is the best thing you could easily do for any of the games. I would be awsome.

It's something I'd really like to do but you're right that it would take a lot of time. Also, there are so many ways of doing it. Would the server computer player choose a mission and the players would be either attackers or defenders? Or would it just be a big free for all battle with a limit on the number of credits you could spend on your own ship?
That one's easy - the host would pick a mission, but one of the missions would be "free-for-all battle".
EDIT: It probably wouldn't be the same set of missions you had available in single-player, though. And yes, teams would be balanced through points limits.
So the most basic mission might be Xpts vs Xpts deathmatch (host picks X). Then there could be another one where P1 has a turret ring which P2 is trying to destroy... then you need to think about whether to deduct points from P1's team or not...
Thinking about it, I guess it is pretty complicated
