help with bitmap editing

Post by slay_player » Tue Dec 20, 2011 12:42 pm

i want to custom my characters, and can edit the suff needed ok, i understand things so far, but the box of multiple images confuses me? I can see its an animation of 'fours' but is contained in one large bitmap picture? How the 'code' interprets this i have no idea! I can edit this in paint, but how do you 'copy' the colour image to its black outline image below it, presumably it has to be spot on match? i also assume it all has to be an exact size, this outer box?
Any info on what this format of image is, how it works, why its all one image not seperate images, etc??????

it reads the different sections of the image as frames. for the standard unit, (1,1) is stationary, and (1,2) (1,3) and (1,4) are used in its animation, 'ping ponging' back and forth.

the bottom section has the transparency values. anything white is transparent, black is opaque. if you were to leave it all white at the bottom, for instance, all of the sprites would be transparent in-game.

here's the empty image i use when i'm starting a mod.
